The recipe I found was really simple with straightforward no-nonsense instructions.
I found some old-world paper straws and Dr. Pepper Gummies at HEB for my garnishes.
I let the kids help with the cake cooking, icing and decorating.

I highly recommend these, they are such fun and really gorgeous.
Into a large bowl, whisk together the flour, sugars, baking soda, and salt.
In a small saucepan over medium-high heat, add Dr. Pepper, butter, and cocoa powder.
Cook for a couple of minutes until a boil starts to form.
Pour into the flour mixture.
In a small bowl, whisk together the eggs, buttermilk, and vanilla until blended.
Add to batter and mix.
To make the icing: Into a medium-sized bowl, whip butter until light and fluffy.
Beat in sugar, followed by cream cheese.
Then slowly beat in Dr. Pepper and cherry juice.
